The Compass That Keeps You on Course

When you’re in action mode (executing on goals, chasing opportunities, building momentum) it’s easy to drift off course without realizing it.

The Greatness Traps look appealing. Achievement feels good. And before you know it, you’re succeeding at things that don’t actually matter to you.

That’s why every goal needs a compass.

The N.S.E.W. Framework

I use a simple framework called N.S.E.W. to filter goals and decisions. Think of it like a compass, with each direction representing a critical question:

N: Non-Negotiables (True North)

These are your core values and principles you refuse to compromise, no matter the pressure.

  • Does this decision align with what matters most to me?
  • Am I honoring my integrity, or making choices based on fear or external approval?

S: Sustainable Growth

Your pursuit of success shouldn’t come at the cost of your long-term well-being.

  • Is this goal pushing me forward at a sustainable pace?
  • Am I making room for both progress and rest?

E: Essence

Stay connected to who you truly are, rather than chasing external validation.

  • Am I making this choice because it resonates with me, or because it looks good to others?
  • Does this reflect my deepest values?

W: Well-Being

True success isn’t just achievements; it’s how you feel while pursuing them.

  • Is this goal allowing me to show up fully in my personal life?
  • How will this decision impact my happiness long-term?

The Filter in Action

Before you say yes to the next opportunity, run it through the compass. If it fails any of the four directions, pause and ask — is this greatness pulling me away from goodness?

This framework is explored in depth in Goodness over Greatness, because the goal isn’t just to achieve more. It’s to achieve what actually matters.
